But if your roof is not in good condition before installation, you could find yourself facing a very costly problem: panels that need to be removed, the roof repaired, and the system re-installed — all at your own expense.
Solar panels add weight to a roof structure. They are penetrated into the roof covering with fixings and brackets. If the tiles are fragile, the timbers compromised, or the flashings failing, installation will accelerate these problems — and removing and refitting a solar array is expensive and disruptive.

Why Get an Independent Survey — Not Just the Installer's Assessment?
A solar panel installer has a strong commercial incentive to proceed with an installation. While reputable installers will raise obvious concerns, they are not roofing specialists and do not carry professional indemnity insurance for structural assessments.
An independent roof surveyor has no interest in whether the installation proceeds. Their only objective is to give you an accurate, honest assessment of your roof's suitability. This is an entirely different level of scrutiny.
